The Ivy in Harrogate is kicking off Halloween in ‘fangtastic’ style with some seriously spellbinding and rather spooky dishes.
And the swanky restaurant didn’t disappoint when it came to haunting first impressions last night. The Hubby and I were invited along to sample their Halloween Menu, available until 31 October from 4pm daily.
The entrance to the restaurant and the interior walls were adorned with climbing green thorns and blood-red roses, interspersed with an occasional skull. It was like something out of a darker version of Beauty and The Beast. Less Disney – more Bram Stoker.
The restaurant was packed and the vibe was electric. The atmospheric lighting, sumptuous décor, fabulous artwork and glamorous bar area is in keeping with other Ivy restaurants and combines old-fashioned Art Deco-style glamour with luxurious modern comforts. I felt like I’d gone back in time – I was half expecting Poirot or Miss Marple might make an appearance at any moment.
We were presented with a spiced apple martini on arrival – setting the scary scene perfectly. I left the wine choosing to our superbly attentive waiter, Rob. He selected a Malbec for us – it was blood-bloodcurdlingly divine.
The Ivy’s Halloween menu offers three choices of starter, main and dessert.
To start, Hubby opted for the Grave-lax and Blood Orange (cured salmon with a blood orange dressing) and I went for the Vampire soup (roast garlic soup). The presentation was exquisite, and my soup was delicately poured over the perfectly roasted garlic in front of me at the table by our waiter – Rob.
We then both opted for the Skull and Crossbones for our main course (Fillet steak), which carries an £8 supplement. It was served with roasted bone marrow, blood sauce (a jus made with black pudding), chips and a spinach pesto, which was topped with Parmesan and pine nuts. It was cleverly presented and incredibly tasty. The huge slab of Fillet steak was melt-in-your-mouth good – I’m ashamed to say I struggled to finish it.
I’m not ashamed to say that I had a little room left for dessert.
I selected the Chocolate Skull dessert (salted caramel chocolate pudding, golden syrup popping candy and honeycomb served with vanilla ice cream) and it was devilishly divine. A rich chocolate brownie with the most delicious syrupy caramel sauce on top. Again, I struggled to finish it.
Hubby chose the Pumpkin Patch. The presentation was off the scary scale. Hot raspberry sauce was poured on his white chocolate pumpkin, once again by the ever-attentive, Rob. I put on my best witchy voice and, for some reason decided to cackle, “I’m Melting!” as we watched the chocolate pumpkin cave in on itself. Rob the waiter threw me a strange look.

The service was exceptional. The food was inventive and creative – not only did it tickle the taste buds, it tickled the funny bone too- a humorous and rather genius nod to spooks, ghouls, ghosts and everything Halloween.
The Halloween Menu is £40.00 per person for 3 courses and is available until the 31st October from 4pm. The fillet steak carries an £8 supplement, but I would say it was definitely worth it…. I haven’t had a steak that good in years!
